If you could try a different job for a day, what would you choose?
Soundboard operator at First Ave… ideally on a night when a band I like is playing.
What advice would you give someone starting out in their career?
If you focus on making the people around you successful, you often find yourself in really good situations.
What is your mantra?
Moderation in everything, including moderation.
How do you get yourself out of a slump?
I usually need a quiet Saturday morning in the office. No meetings, no calls, no commitments. Work at my own pace and preferably with a classic rock playlist from Spotify playing in the background.
What companies or leaders do you admire?
I admire any company that can reinvent itself and stay relevant as markets change and develop. That is what Gravie has always done and continues to do today.
What has been the biggest shift you’ve noticed in your industry in the last decade?
It gets harder every year for small and midsize businesses to afford health coverage for their employees. And, employees at these businesses often pay as much as 40% more for family coverage than employees at larger firms. It is unsustainable and it is a problem worth solving. The biggest shift I have seen is SMBs pursuing new solutions like ICHRA and level-funding to solve the problem.
Who has been most instrumental in your career?
I have had the benefit of great leaders and mentors over the years. But, careers are not just made in the office. My wife and daughters have been the support and inspiration for my career.
What is your go-to celebration meal, drink or tradition?
We completed a sizable fundraise back in June and I celebrated with a Surly Furious. Given the circumstances, it tasted extremely good.
