If you could try a different job for a day, what would you choose?

For one day, I would choose to be a fishing guide. Helping others achieve a dream goal while being outside and enjoying nature seems like a good way to make a living.

What advice would you give someone starting out in your industry?

Look for the “why” in every question before answering the question. If you understand how the information you are being asked to present is going to be used, you will develop a better understanding of everyone else’ job. This will help you do your job better.

What is your mantra?

Set high expectations, work hard, and play harder.

How do you get yourself out of a slump?

I spend a lot of time watching my kids with their activities. It is a blast watching them develop, and supporting them in this way helps me focus on “leaving work when I leave work.”

What companies or leaders do you admire?

I admire companies that utilize innovation and courage to keep ahead of the competition. We have some great local examples to follow in the Twin Cities.

What has been the biggest shift you’ve noticed in your industry in the last decade?

In real estate, there has been a significant shift in desire for people entering the workforce to rent vs. buying their own home, and Opus has taken this opportunity to develop, design, and construct several first class apartment projects in the Twin Cities as well as other markets.

Who has been most instrumental in your career?

I have been fortunate to work with many smart, influential leaders over the years. However, my predecessor, Steve Polacek (CFO of Opus), is my strongest role model and mentor.

What is your go-to celebration meal, drink or tradition?

I always enjoy grilling steaks at home with my family over going out to dinner. It is never too cold to fire up the grill!
