As CFO of Volunteers of America Minnesota and Wisconsin, Deb Steinke brings more than two decades of nonprofit finance and operations experience to one of the region’s leading health and human services organizations. In her role, she leads financial strategy for an organization helping to ensure long term sustainability while aligning resources to mission outcomes. Deb has held senior finance roles in notable organizations including DeLaSalle High School, Vista Prairie Communities and Benedictine Health System. If you could try a different job for a day, what would you choose?
I’d love to be an interior designer for a day. There’s something energizing about transforming a space into something beautiful, functional, and welcoming.
What advice would you give someone starting out in your industry?
Get comfortable with being uncomfortable – that’s where the real growth happens. Stay curious, ask questions, and never stop learning.
What is your mantra?
Align with purpose and lead with integrity.
How do you get yourself out of a slump?
I give myself permission to pause and recharge. Spending time outdoors restores my energy and a gives me a fresh perspective.
What companies or leaders do you admire?
I admire leaders who are authentic, visionary, and unafraid to forge new paths. These are the individuals who lead with clarity of purpose, take bold yet thoughtful risks, and remain grounded in their values no matter how complex the challenge. They don’t just manage change, they shape it.
What has been the biggest shift you’ve noticed in your industry in the last decade?
The most significant shift in nonprofit finance has been the rapid integration of AI into everyday financial management. AI has moved us far beyond traditional reporting – enabling faster forecasting, real‑time analytics, and sharper insights that help leaders make more informed decisions. It’s transforming the finance function from a reactive role to a proactive, strategic partner that can anticipate trends and support long‑term mission impact.
Who has been most instrumental in your career?
My husband has been my greatest supporter and constant source of encouragement. He reminds me of my strengths and celebrates my wins. I’m also grateful to a former CFO mentor who inspired me early on in my career. His wisdom, guidance, and confidence in my potential helped shape the leader I’ve become.
What is your go-to celebration meal, drink or tradition?
Seafood, margaritas, and outdoor patios with friends and family are my favorite go-to choices.
