If you could try a different job for a day, what would you choose?
As cliché as it may sound, I am thriving in my second year of “living my dream” as a full-time Professor of Practice in Accounting and Finance at Hamline University. It was a dream deferred for more than 15 years. Now, I am immersed in a sea of young geniuses aspiring to make their impact on the world. Such an honor and a blessing.
What advice would you give someone starting out in your industry?
The accounting profession will grant you access to a world of endless possibilities and customizable adventures. Be curious and willing to lean in. Hone your prompting skills as business decision-making will require validation of AI responses and prudent analyses of the next steps to take. As a profession, we learn from each other and are stronger together.
What is your mantra?
Free and easy is never free nor sustainable. If you don’t earn or pay the price, you will pay the cost forever.
How do you get yourself out of a slump?
Pray. Seek the counsel and support of my close-knit, trusted group of advisors. I’ve always followed my parents’ guidance: If you allow your identity to be framed by someone else’s vision, then you will imitate anything just to fit in. My tribe taught me how to claim my endowed royalty and not suffer the fairy tales, limitations, and denials proclaimed by others.
What companies or leaders do you admire?
I have been so lucky to work for and with some of the best organizations on the planet. I have been inspired, coached, and empowered by humble, resolute, fearless leaders who exemplified sterling character and a genuine concern for others (now, they are mostly retired and far too numerous to name -THANK YOU ALL). I have always felt secure in following them anywhere. Today, I am hopeful but challenged to recognize virtuous leadership with integrity.
What has been the biggest shift you’ve noticed in your industry in the last decade?
At Hamline University’s School of Business, we are noticing an uptick in our accounting undergrads combining business analytics skills and concentrations.
Who has been most instrumental in your career?
Probably my parents. Although my dad could never secure a job beyond a janitor, he taught me the dignity of hard work and self-reliance, while my mom taught me the value of continuing education.
What is your go-to celebration meal, drink or tradition?
For me, obviously every meal invitation is a celebration. It’s more about the shared experience and time in fellowship. Occasionally, we can be found at Murray’s Steakhouse or the 801 Chophouse for celebrations.
